Momodomi Yuri, a master's student in our lab, successfully completed her final presentation (title: アユの生息する環境に対する価値評価)for her master's degree on August  16. 

Novelia Triana, a third-year doctoral program candidate in our lab, had a viva to obtain her doctorate.

Title: Integration of Stakeholder Perspective and Demand for Co-Benefits Preferences in the Forest Carbon Credit

On July 25th, Yuan Xintong, a first-year master's student, led an in-house seminar in which she introduced the theory and concepts of the con-joint method to 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students, research students, and internship students alike. Following the lecture, the participants demonstrated the application of this method with an example.

Each year, Future Earth, the Earth League and the World Climate Research Programme gather leading scholars from around the world to review the most pressing findings in climate research. The result is the 10 New Insights in Climate Science, delivered as two self-standing products: a peer-reviewed scientific article and this policy report providing a rich and valuable synthesis for policymakers and society at large. The scientific evidence underpinning this year's report was published between January 2022–June 2023.

For policymakers responding to the urgent challenge of the climate crisis, the 10 New Insights in Climate Science 2023/2024 offers credible guidance through 2024 and beyond.

A paper in which assoc.professor Suk worked as an insight coordinator was published. This paper discusses the following 10 topics as new insights into climate science in 2023.

Insight 1. Overshooting 1.5°C is fast becoming inevitable, greatly increasing risks as mitigation action is delayed

Insight 2. Fast-shrinking carbon budget calls for a managed and equitable fossil fuel phase-out

Insight 3. Carbon dioxide removal is necessary but faces challenges in up-scaling, accounting, and governance

Insight 4. New reasons for concern: the uncertain future contribution of land and ocean carbon sinks

Insight 5. The climate and biodiversity emergencies and their solutions are intimately linked

Insight 6. Compound events heighten climate risks in unexpected ways

Insight 9. New approaches enhance justice of adaptation action

Insight 10. A justice lens for mitigation strategies in the food sector

Assoc. Prof. Suk will join in the Global Health Joint Conference 2023 (日本語でグローバルヘルス合同大会2023) and speak at the workshop session titled of  "How to use the Planetary Health " (日本語でプラネタリーヘルスの使い方) .

This workshop is organized by JICA, and experts from Nagasaki University's Interfaculty Initiative in Planetary Health, the Department of Environmental Science, and the Japan Health Policy Organization will participate. The speakers will discuss about "how should we think about planetary health as we relate to global health? "And "how will the concept of planetary health change global health practice?."

Chen Zian published his first journal paper based on his master's research titled "Analysis of Changes in Inter-Industrial Linkages and Economic Effects of Coal Industry in China Using Input–Output Model" in a special issue of "Energy Saving, Low Carbon and Sustainable Economy"of Sustinability journal.

Chen and Yuan, the PhD candidates in our lab,  participated in the 2023 Society for Environmental Economics and Policy Studies (SEEPS) held at Tokai University's Shonan Campus on September 30 and October 1 and presented their research findings. For Chen and Yuan, this is their first presentation at a domestic conference. 

The titles of each are as follows.

Chen's presentation topic: Analyzing the changing characteristics of inter-industrial linkages and economic effects of the coal industry in China using Input-Output model

Yuan’s presentation topic: Decomposition Analysis and Trend Prediction of Energy-Consumption CO2 Emissions in China’s Yangtze River Delta Region

Chen Zian participated in the Asian Society for Environmental and Resource Economics 2023, an international conference in the field of environmental economics in Asia. He presented his research findings in a thematic session titled "Carbon Pricing and Carbon Market in Northeast Asia" which was organized and led by Assoc. Professor Suk. This was his first presentation at an international conference as a professional academic activity.

SSH lab hosted an in-house seminar, in which we invited  Mr. Pim Vercoulen, the chief modeler of the Cambridge Econometrics in the UK.
